How to Customize Your Own Fabric Line: A Guide to OEM/ODM Textile Services

In the modern textile market, “generic” is no longer enough. Whether you are a high-end fashion designer, a hotel supply distributor, or a regional bedding wholesaler, having a unique product line is the key to standing out.

However, moving from a creative concept to a physical container of goods can be daunting. This is where OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) and ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) services come into play. At Tianhong Textile, we have spent over 20 years perfecting the art of custom manufacturing.

Here is your step-by-step guide to building your own fabric or bedding line.

1. Define Your Vision (The OEM vs. ODM Choice)

First, determine how much of the design you want to provide:

  • OEM Service: You provide the exact specifications, designs, and tech packs. We act as your factory, producing the goods exactly as requested.
  • ODM Service: You give us a concept (e.g., “A luxury African-themed bedding line for the US market”). We provide the designs, patterns, and material suggestions based on our trend research and technical expertise.

2. Material and Technical Specifications

A custom fabric starts with the fibers. You need to decide on:

  • Composition: 100% Cotton, 100% Polyester, or specific blends.
  • Weight (GSM): Do you want a lightweight summer sheet (85 GSM) or a heavy-duty hotel-grade fabric (130+ GSM)?
  • Yarn Count: Higher for softness (40s, 60s), lower for durability (24s, 32s).

Tianhong Tip: If you aren’t sure, send us a physical sample of a fabric you like. Our lab will analyze it and replicate the exact specifications.

3. Choosing the Printing and Dyeing Technique

The “look” of your fabric is determined by the processing:

  • Reactive Printing: Best for complex patterns and high color fastness in cotton and premium synthetics.
  • Pigment Printing: Cost-effective and ideal for large geometric patterns.
  • Wax Printing: Our specialty—using specialized resin and dye techniques to create traditional or modern African-inspired patterns.
  • Solid Dyeing: For clean, minimalist collections in any Pantone color of your choice.

4. Prototyping and Sampling

Never skip this stage. Before we move to bulk production:

  1. Digital Proofs: We review the artwork and layouts.
  2. S/O (Strike-Offs): We produce a small sample of the printed fabric for your approval of color and feel.
  3. PPS (Pre-Production Samples): For bedding sets, we sew a complete set for you to check the fit, stitching quality, and labels.

5. Bulk Production & Quality Control

Once the PPS is approved, our 600 water-jet looms and 300 sewing machines go to work. In an integrated factory like Tianhong, QC happens at every stage:

  • Inspection of greige fabric (raw weave).
  • Color matching against your master sample.
  • Final measurement and stitch inspection for every set.

6. Custom Packaging and Branding

The final step is making the product “retail-ready.” We can customize:

  • Insert Cards: Featuring your brand logo and photography.
  • Woven Labels: Sewn into the sheets or garments.
  • Packaging Type: From vacuum-sealed polybags to high-end PVC gift boxes with handles.
